Etiquette of the Kangaroo Island Hunt Club
Hunting is an historical English sport which has lasted many years. Although there are no written rules, certain traditions have developed which form the "Etiquette" (or rules) on which hunting is based. Most of these are commonsense, having regard for safety of horses, riders and property.
AIMS OF THE KIHC
to promote the sport of Hunting.
to provide all facilities for the active conduct of the sport of Hunting.
To do all things possible for the welfare and social benefits of the Club Members
To contribute to, or otherwise assist, any benevolent institution.
HUNTING ETIQUETTE
All riders should greet the Master before the field assembles and visitors should be introduced.
Please be on time (refer to the program). Should circumstances cause you to arrive late, meet the Hunt at an appropriate place and seek the Master's permission to join the field.
If you wish to retire from the Hunt, seek permission from the Master or Field Master to do so. Never dismount prior to the Master without seeking the Master's permission. After stirrup cup, do not remount before the Master. The Master has full control of the Hunt at all times and should be treated with courtesy and respect at all times. No rider may override the Master.
Huntsmen must, at all times, show consideration to other riders. Riders should, at all times, conduct themselves in an orderly manner.
DRESS CODE
Black helmet (Austn Standard No 2603.3) is compulsory.
White shirt; stock, cravat or tie; black boots; Hunting pink or ladies dark jacket with "Royal Stewart" Tartan collar, and white or fawn jodhpurs. Hacking jackets are permissible. Junior riders may wear a Hunting jacket or the KIHC jumper.
Hunt club jumpers, ties and badges are available.
Helmets should be securely fastened while mounted.
IN THE FIELD
The safety of horses and riders is paramount at all times.
Riders must ride at least five horse lengths behind the Field Master, and should not pass the Field Master or Master unless directed to do so.
Care at jumps is essential.
Never take a jump that the Master has not, unless s/he has given permission to do so.
Riders must not cut across the path of a horse about to jump.
Adequate distances must be allowed so that horses may jump safely without danger.
A horse which refuses to jump should be taken to one side and wait until there is sufficient break in the field before attempting to jump again. Horses that consistently refuse to jump and stallions should be ridden in the field at a position determined by the Master.
Horses known to kick should wear a red ribbon in the tail.
Horses which may disrupt the field (ie stallions, kicking or green horses) should be kept to the rear of the field, and away from other horses and people during stirrup cup.
Smoking is not permitted in the field.
AFTER EACH HUNT
At the conclusion of each Hunt, riders should acknowledge the Master before assembling to be formally dismissed.
Members should not begin refreshments until the Master arrives.
MEETINGS AND WORKING BEES
The AGM is programmed for November of each year.
All members are encouraged to attend meetings and working bees whenever possible. Working bees are necessary to maintain and build jumps and course.
GOOD HUNTING!
